The attack happened around 12:15 p.m. on Monday, March 10, while the deputy was assisting someone who voluntarily sought mental health resources at the hospital on Sam Perry Boulevard, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
While handling that case, the deputy noticed 39-year-old Darrell Jackson, of Fredericksburg, in the lobby. Moments later, Jackson allegedly rushed toward the deputy and attacked him, officials said.
The situation escalated quickly as Jackson allegedly assaulted the deputy, prompting hospital security and nursing staff to intervene.
During the struggle, the deputy managed to activate his emergency radio button, which sent an urgent call for backup.
Officers from the Fredericksburg Police Department, Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office, and Stafford Sheriff’s Office rushed to the hospital to help.
Jackson was ultimately detained with the help of security and law enforcement.
The deputy suffered minor injuries, officials said.
Jackson was arrested and charged with assault and battery on law enforcement, disorderly conduct, and obstruction of justice.
He is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
Authorities thanked the "Fredericksburg Police Department, Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office and hospital staff for their quick response and assistance to the attack."
