It's been a busy week for Shaka Barnes in Virginia after he was implicated in an attempted robbery then threatened staff at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, police say. The attempted robbery of juveniles in Fairfax County didn't reap any rewards for an Alexandria man, but it did for the police, who say they got their suspect. Zelalem Zewde, 21, approached two juveniles near the Gum Springs Community Center around 5:35 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12, county police said. An off-duty US Park Police officer accidentally shot and killed a 22-year-old man this weekend because he didn't realize the firearm he was playing with was loaded, police in Virginia said. Police in Fairfax County arrested a man who they say is tied to a string of commercial burglaries. Keith Duncan, of Maryland, was found with the tools he used to carry out the burglaries, county police said. A 51-year-old New York man suspect in a 1994 murder case is back in Virginia. Stephen Smerk, of Niskayuna, NY, was extradited to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on Tuesday, Sept. 26. He is facing second-degree murder in the Nov. 20, 1994 death of 37-year-old Robin Lawrence, who was found dead in a Springfield, VA home, Fairfax County police said. Smerk is believed to have stabbed Lawrence inside of her Reseca Lane home, when he was 22 years old, authorities said. A composite sketch is what police say ultimately helped them identify a man sexually assaulting victims, including minors, on Fairfax County walking paths. Ghafari Abdulahad is believed to have grabbed a girl's wrist before groping her chest on the walking path near the 5800 block of Wood Poppy Court in Burke on Sept. 7 around 6:30 p.m., county police said. Inmate, 53, Found Dead In Cell At Fairfax County Detention Center
A 53-year-old inmate was found dead in her cell at the Fairfax county Adult Detention Center, police said. Latasha Dove was found unresponsive in her single cell at the ADC on Tuesday, Aug. 1, county police said. Deputies immediately began performing life-saving measures before fire and Rescue personnel responded and transported Dove to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
