Ten individuals are each facing up to 20 years in prison for allegedly distributing drugs throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, the US Attorney's Office for Massachusetts said. Authorities learned the group was regularly distributing multi-kilograms of fentanyl out of a stash house in Fall River after launching an investigation in March 2021, the office reports. Massachusetts law enforcement officials are mourning the passing of a police officer known for his compassion who died from COVID-19 on Christmas Eve. Patrolman John Borges, 48, was a search and rescue specialist and officer in Taunton. He was also a lead trainer for Massachusetts Emergency Management and active with the Civil Air Patrol. Borges was born in Portugal and immigrated to the US with his family when he was 18 months old, according to his obituary. He was a member of the Taunton Police for 22 years. The chairman of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is being accused of participating in accepting kickbacks in exchange for a contract to design a resort and casino in Taunton. Targetted COVID-19 testing sites are being dispatched to hot spots in Worcester County and Western Massachusetts. On Monday, July 27, Gov. Charlie Baker announced the expansion of the “Stop the Spread” initiative, which provides free COVID-19 testing where it’s most needed.
