Raging Fire Destroys Cottage At Russian Orthodox Convent In Nanuet A fire has destroyed a cottage located on the property of the Russian Orthodox convent in Nanuet, according to Clarkstown Police. The blaze broke out around 6:18 a.m. Wednesday at the Novo-Diveevo convent located at 100 Smith Road, Clarkstown police Det. Peter Walker said.  Officials were altered to the fire by a woman in the cottage who smelled smoke and called 911. No one was injured, Walker said.  Fire departments on scene included the lead Spring Valley, and Nanuet, Hillcrest, and West Haverstraw. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Man Dies After Being Pulled From Pomona Fire A man died early Wednesday after a fire ripped through his Pomona home. The fire was reported around 3:03 a.m. at 286 Quaker Road, according to Hillcrest Fire Company No. 1. When firefighters arrived on scene flames were spreading outside the back of the one-story house to the roof.  They were also informed by neighbors there was a possibility of an occupant still in the home, the department said. Spring Valley Fire Chief Rescues Man Saving Kitten Spring Valley Fire Chief Ray Canario thought he would go help save a kitten up a tree when a call came in, but instead, he ended up rescuing the man who was trying to save the kitten.  "It was priceless," the chief said with a laugh.  According to Canario, the man, who lives on Wolfe Drive, had used a 6-foot ladder to try and save a kitten in a tree but ended up climbing about 10 feet to reach the little fuzz ball.  Once he reached that high, he couldn't get back down to his 6-foot-ladder with the cat, Canario said.
