Huge Sinkhole Rips Open Melville LIE Exit Lane, Traffic Backed Up For Hours
A sinkhole on the Long Island Expressway nearly swallowed a car Thursday, May 14, and continued to back up westbound traffic on the popular highway into Friday morning, May 15. The sinkhole opened in the afternoon Thursday in the exit lane for Exit 49N in Melville, according to the New York State Department of Transportation. Photos showed a Honda sedan with New Jersey license plates with its front end in the giant gap. Residents: Union Apartment Works To Control Sewage Being Pumped Into Storm Drains
The local health and public works departments were at a Union County apartment complex controlling sewage that was being pumped into local water sources, residents told Daily Voice. Areas around the Mill Run Apartments were cordoned off as officials were apparently told to clean up immediately, residents said. Sewage was being pumped onto the complex's property, storm drains and communal areas, sources said. An area in parking lot H off of Walker Avenue appeared to be the source of the problem.
