A Connecticut teacher with a passion for science hopes to land his class a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: a virtual lesson from legendary science educator Bill Nye, "The Science Guy."
Josh Bartosiewicz, 31, a seventh- and eighth-grade teacher at the Unquowa School in Fairfield, is competing in the "America’s Favorite Teacher" award, a contest that benefits the Planetary Society. Voting is now open and runs until March 6.
If he wins, Bartosiewicz will receive a $25,000 cash prize, a trip to Hawaii, and the chance to have Nye—a childhood hero—teach a live, virtual class for his students.

Two high school students from Westchester won top awards and took home tens of thousands of dollars in the country’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors.
The two 17-year-old students, Ossining resident Thomas Cong and Irvington resident Christopher Zorn, placed No. 2 and No. 6 in the 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search, respectively, the Society for Science announced on Tuesday, March 12.

The death of a Pennsylvania teacher is spreading shock and sadness through the communities he was active in.
John-Tyler Dawes, 27, of Delaware County, died suddenly on Sunday, Feb. 12, according to his obituary.
Born in Neptune, NJ, Dawes graduated from the Delaware County Christian School and later from Messiah College with a degree in education. Dawes was active in various churches in the community and served as a YMCA counselor — "a role he cherished," according to his obituary.

Thirty-eight high school seniors on Long Island are among the top 300 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2023, regarded as the nation’s oldest and most prestigious scholastic science and math competition, the Society for Science announced on Tuesday, Jan. 10.The 300 will be awarded $2,000 each and their schools will be awarded $2,000 for each enrolled scholar.
The Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars were selected from 1,949 applications from 627 high schools across 48 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and four other countries.

Joanna Cole, author of the “Magic School Bus” book series and a Newark native, died Sunday. She was 75.
Cole, who had lived in Sioux City, Iowa, grew up in East Orange and died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
“We're deeply saddened to report the passing of Joanna Cole, award-winning author of the bestselling The Magic School Bus series,” Scholastic said in a statement.
