UPDATE: A man slashed a Clifton police officer in the face, then stabbed himself in the chest as a SWAT team closed in on him Sunday at a Route 3 Howard Johnson's, authorities said. Authorities later identified him as Antwan Whitlock, 35, of Union Township. Whitlock remained hospitalized at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson as of Jan. 5. UPDATE: A Morris County native was killed in a crash on the Garden State Parkway in Clifton late Friday, authorities said. Conor Gaul, 29, was pronounced dead shortly after the pinball-like crash near Exit 154 on the southbound parkway shortly after 10 p.m., New Jersey State Police said. A Nutley driver intentionally rammed a Clifton police car in Newark, ending a high-speed chase that began after he was originally stopped on Route 3, authorities said. An officer stopped a Honda Accord driven by Joshua Ortiz, 26, on the eastbound highway shortly after 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Detective Sgt. Robert Anderson said. A bicyclist was struck and killed in the middle lane of eastbound Route 3 in East Rutherford late Saturday, responders said. Tony Perez, 58, of Bogota was pronounced dead after he was struck by a vehicle shortly after 11:30 p.m., Deputy Police Chief Phillip Taormina said. Lyndhurst police tactical units captured a fugitive wanted for attempted murder in Virginia who they said had a handgun in his hotel room, authorities said. Fatal Crash: Motorcyclist Ejected Off Route 3 Bridge Into Hackensack River
A 28-year-old motorcyclist from Paterson was killed late Tuesday when he was ejected off a Route 3 bridge into the Hackensack River in Secaucus, responders said. Firefighters from Secaucus and East Rutherford recovered the body of the as-yet unidentified victim near the Clarion Empire Meadowlands Hotel south of the bridge about a half-hour after the 11 p.m. crash, they said. They also found his helmet. An ALS unit made the pronouncement. The highway was reopened around 4 a.m.

Responders: Clifton Man, 44, In Route 3 Crash Died Of Medical Cause
A 44-year-old driver killed in a Monday morning crash on Route 3 in Clifton apparently suffered a medical episode, responders told Daily Voice. The 2012 Hyundai Elantra driven by Anton Dittrich of Clifton veered onto the westbound shoulder and scraped along the divider for about 100 yards before coming to a stop near the Bloomfield Avenue exit shortly before 10:30 a.m., authorities said Monday afternoon. A Jersey City man who was being followed by Clifton police sustained serious injuries after crashing his motorcycle on Route 3 at the Route 1&9 off-ramp, authorities said. The 26-year-old motorcyclist was headed eastbound he crashed his 2000 Suzuki just after 9 p.m. Sunday, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said.
