Newburgh Woman Who Falsely Claimed Purple Heart, Defrauded Veterans’ Charities Learns Fate
An Orange County woman who made national headlines for falsely claiming to be a wounded war hero and defrauding veterans’ charities has been sentenced to federal prison.
Sharon Toney-Finch, 43, of Newburgh, was sentenced on Tuesday, Sept. 30, to 12 months and one day in prison after pleading guilty in March to wire fraud and stolen valor offenses, the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced.
In addition to her prison term, Toney-Finch was ordered to serve three years of supervised release and to pay $84,000 in restitution and $85,000 in forfeiture.

Dennis "Andrew" Foy, who was awarded the Purple Heart while fighting the War on Terror, died on Tuesday, July 8, according to his obituary from the Boucher Funeral Home website.
A Gloucester County resident, Foy served six years in the United States Army with honor and distinction, deployed to both Afghanistan and Iraq, his obituary reads. He was awarded a Purple Heart, "a reflection of the courage and sacrifice he embodied throughout his military service," according to his obituary.

Former Congressman Charles "Charlie" Rangel, who represented five districts in New York City over 46 years, has died.
He was 94. A cause of death was not given.

Halifax Army Vet Dies Saving Son, Niece From Drowning While On Vacation: 'He Was A Warrior'
A Massachusetts man who was honored as a hero on the battlefield proved his heroism once again, sacrificing his life to save his son and niece from drowning.
Joshua Curtis, 38, of Halifax, was visiting family at Fernandina Beach, Florida — just north of Jacksonville — last week when a rip current dragged his 6-year-old son and niece deep into the ocean, according to reports.
Curtis swam out and rescued them but drowned in the effort. Both children survived.

A soldier who was killed inaction over 70 years ago has been identified, according to a release on Thursday by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.
Army Sgt. James N. Stryker, 20, of West Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, who was killed during the Korean War, was identified by DPAA on Aug. 5, 2020.
DNA analysis was used to identify Sgt. Stryker’s remains were buried as Unknowns at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also known as the Punchbowl, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the release says.
