HSS Expert Explains Advances In Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Every now and again, I will see a patient in my office that had surgery for scoliosis in the 1970s and 1980s. As we talk about their spine, the conversation inevitably touches on their hospital course at the time of their surgery: several weeks in the hospital, a body cast, maybe some traction and months until they felt back to themselves. The stories are interesting because that hospital course is anachronistic today. What may be more interesting, however, is that advances in minimally invasive technology are increasingly making even the spine surgery experiences of a few years ago seem like…

Too Young For A Knee Replacement? Do You Know Your Options? Too Young For A Knee Replacement? Do You Know Your Options?
Too Young For A Knee Replacement? Do You Know Your Options? Have you ever heard the following words from your doctor: “You have arthritis...but you need to wait until you’re old enough for a knee replacement.”? Waiting is not easy when you are in pain, even more so when this wait is measured in decades for some young patients until they can undergo a surgical procedure that is essentially deemed a last resort. We are all humans and our bodies wear out – eventually, everyone is headed towards arthritis. However, for some people, the wear-and-tear starts earlier in life and the decline is more rapid. If you tear your ACL or meniscus in high school or c…

Suffering From A Rotator Cuff Tear? HSS Talks Next Steps Suffering From A Rotator Cuff Tear? HSS Talks Next Steps
Suffering From A Rotator Cuff Tear? HSS Talks Next Steps As the most flexible joint in the human body, the shoulder has a wide range of motion and is more prone to injury than other joints. One very common shoulder problem is a torn rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the joint, and a tear can result from an injury such as a fall or heavy lifting. Many times though, the tear occurs slowly, resulting from normal wear and tear and repetitive activities over many years. As we age, we’re more susceptible to rotator cuff damage. In fact, many older adults probably have a small tear without significant sympto…
You Have A Torn ACL: Now What? You Have A Torn ACL: Now What?
You Have A Torn ACL: Now What? The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, is a ligament inside the knee that provides stability to the knee. Most ACL injuries are non-contact meaning that a collision is not necessary for the injury to occur. At the time of injury, people commonly feel a “pop” within the knee followed by pain, difficulty walking, swelling within the knee and reduced range of motion of the knee. What do y…
