Dozens Have Been Charged In Carjacking, Car Theft Investigations
Authorities have placed dozens of people behind bars in disrupting a pipeline that delivered luxury vehicles from North and Central Jersey to customers in West Africa via ports in Newark, Elizabeth and Staten Island, the Attorney General's office said Monday . Multi-alarm Fire Breaks Out At Union Home Sunday, Woman Reportedly Hurt
Firefighters were in the 1900 block of Hillside Avenue in Union Sunday night where fire was ripping through a private home. Fire broke out at the home around 6:30 p.m. and the blaze quickly went to multiple alarms. A woman was rescued from a second-floor window of the home, according to a published report. She was hospitalized with burns at St. Barnabas Medical Center. Her condition was not immediately known. Bear Spotted In South Orange: Report
Police in Maplewood issued an alert Friday afternoon that a bear had been spotted on Wyoming Avenue in neighboring South Orange. The Village Green reported that the text went out around 12:22 p.m., adding that schools in the area had been advised to hold recess indoors. The public was asked to avoid contact with the animal and to call police if it's seen. The sighting was reported in the general vicinity of South Mountain Reservation, where bears have been spotted in the past. Black bears have been seen in all 21 of the state's counties.

Family In Union Coping With Second Devastating House Fire
Seven years after fire heavily damaged their home, a family in Union are trying to cope with yet another fire -- one that has left them homeless. The fire broke out on Revere Avenue near the Maplewood border Sunday night. Union and Maplewood firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 90 minutes but the home sustained heavy damage. Police made a number of arrests at a Nutley house party Aug. 16 that was advertised on social media -- and drew a multitude of uninvited guests. Officers investigating a noise complaint on Wayside Lane saw several dozen people fleeing as they arrived. A man who was in a Maplewood home when two armed intruders entered early Monday morning grabbed one of the robber's guns and fired it, sending them running, one of the victims told WABC 7. Two masked men dressed in black entered the Lombardy Place home around 3 a.m. and demanded money at gunpoint, a woman who lives there told the station. A Maplewood man faces up to five years in prison after he was found guilty of beating up a woman who he felt was taking too long getting out of a car, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said Wednesday. Jahmil Jasper, 39, was seen on surveillance video emerging from his gray Audi Dec. 8 and attacking the 51-year-old woman, who was recovering from recent surgery. Two police officers were injured when they helped thwart a carjacking attempt in Union Sunday, the police department said in a statement. Shortly before 7 p.m., police were called to the parking lot of the Home Depot on Springfield Avenue, where a man, later identified as Marcus Perkins of Lindenwold, demanded the keys from person who was loading his vehicle.
