Bergen Drug Detectives Nab Albany Driver Near GWB After Stolen Car Chase
A driver from Albany tried to outrun detectives in a stolen car but was seized near the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, authorities said. Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said his Narcotic Task Force detectives got wind on Tuesday, March 7 that a BMW 550 that had just been stolen during a burglary in Maplewood was headed their way. They tried stopping the driver, John Leroy Johnson, 38, in Englewood, the prosecutor said, but he kept going, apparently bound for the bridge. The 49-year-old Jacoby Street resident was getting out of his car around 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, when two black men approached him, local police said. A woman recently released from some type of institution is believed to have stabbed herself and set multiple fires in her Maplewood home the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 7, sources with direct knowledge of the incident tell Daily Voice. Responders at the scene on Maplewood Avenue noted some type of hoarding situation, sources said. A spokesperson with the prosecutors office said only that detectives with the major crimes unit were responding and that the incident was not a homicide.
