Beginning at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, shoppers across Maryland can skip the state's 6 percent sales tax on qualifying back-to-school clothing, shoes and backpacks during Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week, which runs through 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15. The annual sales tax holiday means qualifying clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less per item can be purchased tax-free. Corey Alexis, 41, was charged Wednesday, April 29, in connection with a robbery at Sam’s Food Mart on West Main Street. The incident happened on Oct. 14, according to Meriden police. Lt. Darrin McKay said Alexis was allegedly armed with a firearm during the robbery. Investigators identified him as the suspect after what police described as an extensive investigation.
