Tributes are pouring in for Jack Shapiro, a retired NYPD sergeant, devoted father, and avid surfer, who died tragically while surfing at Gilgo Beach on Sunday, Jan. 19.
Jack Shapiro, 54, of Holbrook, was remembered as a man of many passions, including his service as a decorated NYPD sergeant, his craftwork, and his dedication to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and surfing.

Surfer Dies After Water Rescue At Gilgo Beach: Suffolk Police
A surfer was pulled unresponsive from the water at Gilgo Beach and later pronounced dead at a hospital, Suffolk County police announced on Sunday, Jan. 19.
Marine Bureau officers responded to the Babylon beach at approximately 2:20 p.m. after a good Samaritan spotted and pulled an unresponsive man from the water, police said.
The man, identified as Jack Shapiro, 54, of Holbrook, was brought to shore, where CPR was initiated. He was then transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
