Mondaire Jones Holds Big Lead In Race To Take Over Nita Lowey's Congressional Seat
Early voting results are in, and Mondaire Jones has taken a commanding lead to take over longtime Congresswoman Nita Lowey's seat in the 17th District.
New York’s 17th District includes most of Westchester, and all of Rockland County.
Lowey, who announced last year that she would be stepping down, was elected to Congress in 1989.
As of Wednesday, June 24, Jones had picked up 13,625 votes (44 percent), according to the Board of Elections.
No other candidate has garnered more than 20 percent of the vote:
Adam Schleifer: 6,253 (20 percent);
Sen. David Carlucci: 3,958 (13 percent);

Rockland Mourns Death Of County Clerk Paul Piperato
Shock and sadness have been expressed across the region as news spread of the sudden death of an area county clerk.
Paul Piperato, 61, Rockland County's Clerk, was known for his love of the county and his support of local organizations, died Wednesday morning, May 5, at home.
A cause of death has not been announced.
"Today Rockland County mourns," said Rockland County Executive Ed Day. "The loss of County Clerk Paul Piperato shows the truth in the phrase, ‘only the good die young.’"

Killer Of 16-Year-Old Pearl River Girl Back Behind Bars After Arrest For Parole Violation
Richard LaBarbera, the recently released killer of a 16-year-old Pearl River teen, is back in jail after violating his parole, state officials said.
LaBarbera was released earlier this month after serving nearly 40 years for the 1980 murder of Paula Bohovesky. His co-killer, Robert McCain, was recently denied parole.
Paula's mother, Lois Bohovesky, 87, who fought parole for both men, said she is "delighted that he is back behind bars," but is surprised it happened so quickly.
