Oscars: Paul Thomas Anderson Wins Best Director For 'One Battle After Another' Paul Thomas Anderson won the Oscar for Best Director at the 98th annual Academy Awards on Sunday, March 15. Anderson won for directing "One Battle After Another" a movie that follows the exploits of The French 75, a revolutionary group that tries to stay one step ahead of the federal government. The acclaimed director had won earlier in the evening for Best Adapted Screenplay. He is also nominated for Best Picture. At previous Oscar ceremonies, Anderson was always the bridesmaid, never the bride, having been nominated 11 times for six different movies.
