Fire Company Treasurer Embezzled $900K, Berks DA Claims
The treasurer of a Berks County fire company is accused of stealing nearly $900,000 over a period of seven years, prosecutors say.
Kenneth J. Long of the Birdsboro Union Fire Department is charged with theft, forgery, and related counts and surrendered to detectives on Monday, Aug. 14, the Berks District Attorney's Office said.
The 61-year-old came under investigation in January, when firefighters reported "more than $500,000" were missing from the department's accounts, authorities said.

Nearly two pounds of meth was seized, along with bags of crack cocaine and thousands of dollars when police raided the home of an accused drug dealer in Berks County, authorities said.
Jonathan R. Smith, 31, was arrested following the warranted search of his Endlich Avenue home in Mt. Penn on Thursday, June 9, the Berks County District Attorney's Office said.
An investigation began in May when detectives with the DA's office identified Smith as a “street-level” dealer who was selling cocaine in Reading, they said.

More than four ounces of cocaine, thousands of dollars worth of marijuana, and a loaded rifle were seized from a cocaine dealer in Berks County, authorities said.
The Berks County DA's Office got a tip in January that Bryan Torres, 34, was dealing cocaine out of his Reading home, they said. A search warrant served at his home on Cotton Street turned up the following on Friday, March 25:
Approximately 120 grams (4.2 ounces) of suspected cocaine, valued at $12,000
An amount of marijuana packaged for sales valued at $2,000.

More than a quarter pound of methamphetamine, two pounds of marijuana and three handguns with obliterated serial numbers were seized from a meth dealer in Berks County, authorities said.
The Berks County DA's Office got a tip in January that Matthew McClain, 24, was dealing meth out of his Mount Penn home, they said.

Guns and several packets of heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine were seized in the arrest of a man who county detectives say was trafficking drugs in Reading, authorities said.
Khalil Bell, 42, in July was accused of selling drugs to customers on Spring Garden and Muhlenberg Streets, according to the Berks County Detectives Office.
He was arrested by detectives Thursday at his home in the 200 block of South 3rd Street. A search warrant turned up $2,000 worth of drugs and more, authorities said.

A suspected drug dealer was arrested Friday on accusations he trafficked heroin, fentanyl, and other drugs in Reading, authorities said.
Members of the Berks County District Attorney’s Drug Task Force initiated an investigation in the 200 block of North 4th Street in August 2021, according to Chief County Detective Michael Gombar.
As the investigation continued, detectives learned that Anthony Pagan, 27, allegedly made heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine deals with customers on North 4th Street, Gombar said.

Several packets of cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl were seized in the arrest of a Reading man for his alleged role in "drug activity," authorities said.
Juan Alberto Alicea-Burgos, 44, in July was identified by the Berks County District Attorney’s Drug Task Force as a known drug dealer to Reading residents, officials said.
He was arrested by Berks County Detectives on August 6 at his home in the 200 block of Hudson Street. A search warrant turned up $8,000 worth of drugs and more, authorities said.

Four people were arrested Wednesday for drug trafficking in Reading, authorities said.
The four-month-long investigation began in early March when confidential sources told Reading police that Julio Arocho, 53, and his associates were dealing fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and crack cocaine in the 400 block of Minor Street, Chief County Detective Michael Gombar said.
Carlos Davila, 40, Emily Grace Bernheiser, 41, and Maria Quinones, 38, frequently sold the drugs to undercover officers on Minor Street, authorities said.
