Philadelphia Police Name Officer Killed In Airport Shooting (Updated) Two Philadelphia police officers were shot — one fatally — while in the parking garage at the Philadelphia International Airport on Thursday night. Officer Richard Mendez, a 50-year-old with 22 years in the department, was hit multiple times and died from his wounds, PPD brass said at a Friday evening press conference.  Officer Raul Ortiz, 60, was hit once in the arm and is in stable condition at Jefferson Hospital, according to Interim Commissioner John Stanford. The unidentified victim was in the southbound tracks at the Oregon station when they were hit around 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, according to a SEPTA spokesperson. "The person who was in the tracks is alive, was conscious, and is now being treated at Jefferson Hospital," the spokesperson said. Authorities are still looking into why the victim was on the tracks, but they believe no foul play was involved.
