'Large-Scale' Drug Traffickers Wanted In Berks County: DA
Two members of an alleged Berks-based "large-scale drug trafficking organization" are still on the run, according to the District Attorney's Office. Of the 29 men charged as part of the DA's "Operation Knockout" last month, all except for 44-year-old Jeffrey Kanelos and 34-year-old Moises Franco are in custody, authorities said. Both men are Reading residents and face multiple felony charges including corrupt organizations and conspiracy, said officials. A 67-year-old man has died after his motorcycle hit a bear on Interstate 81 early on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, state police say. Frank J. Castrignano was heading south when the bear wandered onto the highway from the eastern shoulder, authorities said. The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. in Rice Township, according to State Police. A Kutztown University student is charged with aggravated assault and ethnic intimidation after police say he nearly hit a pedestrian with his car and shouted racial slurs in a Walmart parking lot. Standoff Ends Peacefully In Exeter
A Berks County man was arrested uninjured Sunday following a police standoff in Exeter, authorities said. Police were called to a house near Schoffers Road and Route 562 around 2 p.m. after a man called EMS and threatened authorities, according to WFMZ and the Exeter Police Department. This prompted a shelter-in-place order, which was in effect until 5:10 p.m. when the incident was resolved peacefully, police said.

Authorities have identified the motorcyclist killed in a Berks County crash as a 22-year-old man. Anthony Rota, of Boyertown, was heading west on Route 422 when he lost control and struck a guardrail around 8:30 a.m. in Exeter, according to police.
