The Mechanicsburg, PA native who launched his career in Philly announced his new series "Tires" was bought by Netflix days after bombing his "Saturday Night Live" monologue.
Gillis, 36, allegedly self-financed and co-created the show, which IMDB says is about a "nervous" auto repairman who must save his father's shop amid being "tormented" by his cousin.
Last Saturday, Gillis opened SNL by telling the audience he had been fired from the show years prior apparently for using offensive slurs on a podcast, the New York Times reports.
He went on in his monologue to say he was "gay for his mom" and to joke about Down syndrome. The crowd somewhat chuckled, and Gillis said, "I thought that was going to get a bigger laugh. I thought we were allowed to have fun here."
Gillis grew up in Mechanicsburg and played football for Trinity High School in Camp Hill before playing for Elon University. He ultimately graduated from West Chester University and later moved to Philadelphia to help launch his comedy career.
"Tires" debuts on May 23.
