Multiple residents have contacted police, stating they’ve received calls claiming they’ve missed a court appearance or have been charged with a crime.

The caller then demands that the recipient pay fines and costs to avoid being arrested.

Some people report the callers using the names of actual police officers.

The police issued a statement on Thursday to remind the public fines and costs are assessed and collected by the Courts, not the police.

If you receive a call like this, doing the following:

  • Ask for an incident number
  • Request the officer’s name
  • Take down the officer’s badge number
  • Confirm the information by contacting the Dauphin County Communication Center using the non-emergency number (717) 558-6900.
  • Ask to speak to someone from the agency the caller claims to be representing.

Police remind the public that “under no circumstances should you purchase gift cards, vouchers or similar forms of payment.”

They also ask you not to disclose any personal information unless you are certain you are speaking to an actual Law Enforcement Officer.
