The 30-year-old man working as a contractor on a rehabilitation project plummeted into an empty concrete tank approximately 20 feet down around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2023, authorities said.
"Medical professionals used ladders to descend into the tank and treated the man inside, while crews outside prepared to (extricate) him, which took over an hour," police stated in a release around 6 p.m., adding, "Local fire companies worked together and lifted the patient out of the tank with a system of ropes."
The rescue was completed at the plant at 405 South Reading Road around 4 p.m., according to emergency dispatchers.
A helicopter was sent to the scene but not used, authorities told Daily Voice.
The man was taken by ambulance to Lancaster General Hospital, and additional information about his condition will not be released according to emergency dispatch.
Police said the following crews came to the scene: Ephrata Ambulance, Reamstown Ambulance, Lincoln Fire Company, Pioneer Fire Company, Akron Fire Company, Denver Fire Company, Garden Spot Fire & Rescue, Manheim Township Fire & Rescue,WellSpan Medic 4, WellFlight, and Penn Medicine Mobile Physician.
The incident remains under investigation, according to the police.
