Daniel N. Miller of New Wilmington died at the scene of the crash on New Castle Mercer Road in Wilmington Township on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 5:37 p.m., according to a release the following day by the Pennsylvania state police.
A 2016 Ford F-150XLT was being driven south by 29-year-old Michael W Coiro with 28-year-old Tara R. Macri in the passenger seat; the pair were both from New Castle and were unbelted when Coiro slammed into the back of Miller's buggy, PSP explained in the release.
The force of the blow ejected Miller causing him to land in a nearby field with fatal injuries, according to state police.
The area was a marked 40-mile-per-hour zone, but police did not note Coiro's estimated speed at the time of the crash.
The Ford "suffered heavy front end damage" but neither Coiro nor Macri were harmed, the police detail in the release.
The horse was not injured and was seen walking shortly after the crash.
Miller's funeral and memorial service details were not publicly released, but Amish community members were seen praying at the crash site.
PSP-Butler Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist, Noga EMS, Wilmington Volunteer Fire Company, Mercer County Department of Public Safety and the Mercer County District Attorney's office assisted at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
