Man Walking Dog Dies 9 Days After Being Struck, York Co. Coroner Says

An 88-year-old man has died just over a week after he was hit by a pick-truck, the York County Coroner's office announced on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.

John Smeltzer of the 100 block of Claire Avenue, Hellam Borough was crossing West Market Street with his dog when he was struck by a 2017 Chevy Silverado turning onto the road from South Lee Street around 5:30pm on May 3, 2023, authorities explained. 

Smeltzer was taken to WellSpan York Hospital where he died from blunt force trauma to his head at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2023, as certified by Deputy Coroner Michelle Rau. 

The man of death is accidental, although it remains unclear if the driver will be charged. 

Smeltzer studied at York College of Pennsylvania, according to his social media profile. His "loving wife and best friend of 70 years," Mary M. Smeltzer died at the age of 89 at their home on Monday, March 13, 2023, according to her obituary.

The dog he was walking was possibly, Mary's beloved Sheltie dog "Buddy," as mentioned in her obituary.

The couple is survived by their son John P. Smeltzer (fiance, Brittany Barshinger; former wife, Dawna) of Red Lion; daughter Sherry A. Nace (Dave) of Hellam; grandchildren Nicole, Katelynn, Taryn, John, and Chris; 14 great-grandchildren; and their great-great granddaughter, as detailed in Mary's obituary and social media.

John's official obituary with his funeral and memorial service details have yet to be released.
