Firefighters were called to the 1900 block of Dennie Street around 2:15 a.m., a Philadelphia Fire Department spokesperson said. They arrived to find heavy fire on the first floor of a two-story row house, according to officials.

The fire was placed under control by 2:26 a.m., PFD said.

A 62-year-old man was killed and four others injured: a 19-year-old woman, a 1-month-old infant, a man of unknown age, and a 38-year-old woman who jumped from the building to escape, authorities said.

Neighbors assisted seven other residents in evacuating, including three adults and four juveniles, PFD said.

The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the Fire Marshal's Office.

PFD is reminding residents to check their smoke alarms. Free alarms are available by calling 311.
