Layoffs are sweeping across the country at a pace not seen in years, hitting government workers, retail employees, and tech professionals the hardest, according to a new study.
US employers announced 172,017 layoffs in February, the highest total since the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in July 2020, according to a report released by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas on Thursday, Mar. 6. Last month's cuts were 245 percent higher than January and more than double the job losses from February 2024.

Philip Walker, 39, of Pittsburgh, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion before United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania said.

Shark Attack: 2 American Women Seriously Injured At Bahamas Resort
Two American women suffered injuries in a rare Bahamas shark attack.
The tourists were swimming in Bimini Bay, a popular resort, when the incident happened early Friday evening, Feb. 7, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
After receiving initial treatment, they were airlifted to a hospital. One of the women, both of whom are from Florida, suffered severe injuries and underwent three surgeries, ABC News reports.
The incident is under investigation.

Berks Man Who Sexually Abused Autistic Child, Fled Sentencing, Captured In Dominican Republic
A Reading man who sexually abused an autistic child and skipped his sentencing hearing was captured in the Dominican Republic and returned to Berks County, authorities announced Friday, Feb. 7.
Rafael Vendrell, 75, pleaded nolo contendere to two counts of Aggravated Indecent Assault in November 2023 after being accused of sexually abusing an autistic juvenile, according to Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams.
Vendrell was released on bail while awaiting his sentencing on Feb. 14, 2024, but failed to appear in court, prompting a judge to issue a bench warrant, authorities said.
