He was age 83. Bierbauer’s death at his Spruce Pine, North Carolina, residence on Friday, Aug. 29, came as he enjoyed retirement, a university spokesperson said. The 73-year-old Knoller's death came in  Washington, DC, on Saturday, Aug. 30, after a period of declining health. CBS News confirmed his death and noted that he had been battling diabetes for years. A New York City native, he was born in Brooklyn in 1952, and graduated from New York University before launching a journalism career that spanned five decades.
