Local police say an officer patrolling the area near McDonald’s last week spotted the wreckage of a crash and immediately called for backup on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
Upon arrival, officers and emergency personnel found the driver trapped in a burning vehicle. First responders from surrounding jurisdictions worked tirelessly to free the driver before firefighters arrived, authorities said.
Despite their efforts, the driver—who was transported to Temple University Hospital—succumbed to their injuries, police said. Their identity is being withheld out of respect for the family, according to the department.
Authorities say evidence suggests the crash was a result of street racing.
“These roads are not racetracks," police said in a statement. "High speeds, unpredictable traffic, and lack of safety measures make for a lethal combination—one that puts not only drivers at risk but also passengers, bystanders, and innocent motorists."
Detectives are now working to identify and locate another vehicle related to the crash, authorities said.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses, police said. They released a photo of the vehicle in question and are asking for the public’s help.
Anyone who was in the area of Route 38 between Mount Laurel Township and Mount Holly Township on Tuesday, Feb. 18, between 9:30 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. and may have seen the incident or vehicle is urged to contact Detective Fenton or Detective Simpson at 609-267-8300.
