A notice appeared in the Zelle app on Wednesday, April 2, telling users that they could no longer use the app to send or receive money. Those who still have the app can still log in to view their transaction history, but transfers are no longer supported.
Zelle said it had about 151 million users in 2024, with people and businesses sending more than $1 trillion.
"This app is no longer available for sending and receiving money," the notice said. "You will be able to log in until August 11, 2025, but not send or receive money. To continue using Zelle, please enroll through one of the more than 2,200 mobile banking apps that offer Zelle."
Zelle first announced it would shutter the app on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024. The app launched in 2017 to serve people whose banks hadn't yet joined the network.
According to Zelle, only about 2% of transactions were taking place outside of bank apps as of 2024.
"The vision for Zelle has always been a solution that allows people to send and receive money to and from those they know and trust directly between bank accounts," Zelle said in its October 2024 news release. "Today, the vast majority of people using Zelle to send money use it through their financial institution’s mobile app or online banking experience, and we believe this is the best place for Zelle transactions to occur."
Zelle also said it's trying to reduce fraud risks and simplify how people access the platform. App users were urged to check if their bank or credit union offers Zelle and to re-enroll there before the full shutdown in August.
The app will remain active in a limited form to provide information about scams, fraud prevention, and which banks offer Zelle.
