Just days after new guidance was released by the government stated that machines used to make semiconductors, flat-screen TVs, tablets, and desktop computers are excluded from President Trump’s 125 percent tariff on Chinese goods, the administration is now saying those exemptions are only temporary.

In a social media post on Truth Social on Sunday, April 13, Trump said there are “no exceptions,” and tariffs will apply to those items, apparently clarifying the US Customs and Border Protection bulletin issued Friday, April 11.

“NOBODY is getting ‘off the hook,' ” Trump wrote. “There was no Tariff ‘exception’ announced on Friday. These products are subject to the existing 20% Fentanyl Tariffs, and they are just moving to a different Tariff ‘bucket.’ ”

“We are taking a look at Semiconductors and the WHOLE ELECTRONICS SUPPLY CHAIN in the upcoming National Security Tariff Investigations.”

In an interview on ABC's This Week before Trump's announcement, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that electronics imported from China would be facing a separately carved out tariff that wold likely come in a "month or two."

"All those products are going to come under semiconductors, and they're going to have a special focus type of tariff to make sure that those products get reshored," Lutnick said. "We need to have semiconductors, we need to have chips, and we need to have flat panels -- we need to have these things made in America.

"We can't be reliant on Southeast Asia for all of the things that operate for us."
