Trump Hints At 2029 Comeback, Says Third Term Could Be Possible: Reports

Long live the king?

President Donald Trump was reportedly not joking when he floated the idea of running for a third term, stating that "there are methods which you could do it," in an interview with NBC News.

During the call with NBC on Sunday, Trump reportedly stressed that a lot of people want him to ignore the Constitution and run for the third term, but also made note that it's still early in his second administration and there are still things to be accomplished.

Trump did not specify how he planned to circumvent the 22nd Amendment, but reportedly has plans in mind for 2029.

It would mark the first time a president served more than two terms since Franklin D. Roosevelt served four terms from 1933 through 1945, which ultimately led to the amendment formally limiting presidents to two terms in office after it had been an unwritten precedent previously.

Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles - who has been a staunch supporter of Trump, including drafting a resolution to enable a president to be elected for a third term - took to social media on Friday, stressing that "NOBODY is being crowned king or named dictator," noting that it would only impact those who were not elected for consecutive terms.

"It's important to note that this legislation would only allow those who have served two non-consecutive terms to be elected for a third," he wrote. "President Trump should be allowed, if he chooses, to seek a third term to categorically undue the decay progressive have wrought on our great country."

Earlier this month, Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist, floated the idea  NewsNation that Trump could - and was already exploring - ways to keep the president in office.

“I’m a firm believer that President Trump will run and win again in 2028,” Bannon reportedly said. “We’ve had greater long shots than Trump 2028.” He added that they’re “not prepared to talk about it publicly, but in a couple of months, I think we will be.”

The latest news comes more than a month after the White House's controversial post on X quoting Trump declaring himself the savior of New York.

"CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!," the post read with a portrait of the president sporting a crown.

Trump would be 82 years old at the end of his second term - the same age as Joe Biden in 2025.

According to this week's most current Reuters/Ipsos poll, 45 percent of those polled approve of Trump's job performance, up 1 percent from a month ago, and higher than his approval rating was during his first term.
