Alexander Ovechkin did the once-unthinkable, topping Wayne Gretzky with his 895th career goal, putting himself atop the leaderboard with a record that may never be broken.
Minutes into the second period on Sunday afternoon, Ovechkin took in a cross-ice pass in his favorite spot off the left wing, ending his chase with "The Great One" and bringing Capitals fans to their feet with his historic goal.
After putting the puck in the net for the 895th time, Ovechkin belly flopped across the ice as his team mobbed him on top of the Islanders logo at UBS Arena.
Capitals owner Ted Leonsis was quick to take to social media to celebrate the goal, and all that Ovechkin has meant to the community in his near two-decade career with the team.
"(Ovechkin's) accomplishments as an athlete and person, and his unbreakable connection to this team, this city and this fanbase are nothing short of remarkable," he wrote.
"What an important moment in history for Alex, his family and the entire DC community."
The goal resonated past just the hockey world, with that DC community celebrating alongside other local teams, with congratulatory messages being posted by the Wizards, Major League Baseball, the Commanders, and other fans from afar.
Capitals broadcaster Joe Beninati summed it up succinctly after the puck hit the back of the net: "SCORE! The chasing days are done. Alexander Ovechkin is the greatest goal scorer in the history of the NHL."
