Body Recovered From Pequea Creek Identified As Man With Troubled Past (Update)

A Lancaster County man with a troubled past was found dead in Pequea Creek after emergency crews responded to a water rescue call on Sunday, Feb. 9, Pennsylvania State Police announced.

Charles Ashley Duroni, 54, of West Lampeter Township, was retrieved from the water near Marticville Road and River Road in Martic Township around 1:05 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9, after emergency personnel responded to a water rescue call. Fire and EMS crews pulled him from shallow water and attempted lifesaving efforts, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Duroni had a history of run-ins with the law. In 2021, he was arrested in Utah after calling emergency dispatchers and falsely claiming a police officer had been shot, prompting a massive law enforcement response. At the time, he admitted to using crack cocaine and was described as suffering from schizophrenia, KSL reported. In 2009, he faced charges of domestic violence in San Francisco, California, court records show.

His body was transported to the Lancaster County Forensic Center, where an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12. The cause and manner of his death remain under investigation.
