Dervin Mateo-Berrios, 51, pleaded guilty to Criminal Attempt of First-Degree Murder and two counts of Aggravated Assault after the brutal attack, the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office said.

Mateo-Berrios shot the woman — his ex-girlfriend — in the stomach, pelvis, and arm during a violent argument inside his residence in the 600 block of Ocean Avenue around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2024, according to police. The woman survived despite her life-threatening injuries.

After the shooting, officers found Mateo-Berrios intoxicated and hiding behind a trashcan in the 600 block of Third Street, court records show.

At the time of the attack, Mateo-Berrios was already serving probation for multiple DUI convictions and a prior simple assault, authorities said. He was denied bail after his arrest due to concerns for the victim’s safety.

During sentencing, Mateo-Berrios declined to speak. His attorney said he was “incredibly sorry” and “very thankful” the victim survived and is recovering.

In addition to his prison sentence, Mateo-Berrios was ordered to pay over $147,500 in restitution to the victim, prosecutors said.

Assistant District Attorney Christopher Miller handled the prosecution. Lancaster City Bureau of Police Officer Adam Dommel filed the charges.
