Amelia McEvoy, 20, recently of Hopewell Township and originally of Baltimore, was the restrained front-seat passenger in a blue SUV traveling southbound on the Susquehanna Trail South in Springfield Township on Friday, Jan. 17, at 10:52 p.m., officials said.
The crash happened on the Susquehanna Trail South in Springfield Township when a northbound vehicle attempted to pass a slower-moving car by crossing a double yellow line around a curve on a hill, Pennsylvania State Police said in a release on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The vehicle entered the opposing lane of traffic, forcing a southbound blue SUV to swerve to avoid a head-on collision, police said. The SUV struck a tree on the front passenger side, where Amelia McEvoy was seated, authorities added. The northbound vehicle fled the scene.
Witnesses reported that a white SUV crossed into the southbound lane to pass another vehicle, forcing the blue SUV to swerve off the road near Seaks Run Road to avoid a collision. The SUV crashed into a tree, with significant damage to the right front and side, investigators said. The white SUV fled the scene, Pennsylvania State Police reported.
McEvoy died on impact from blunt force injuries, Deputy Coroner Scott Pennewill said. An autopsy conducted Monday confirmed her death was accidental.
McEvoy, one of five sisters, was remembered as having a vibrant personality. Her first public post on Facebook in 2017 read: "Hi, I’m Amelia and I love pineapples, dance, gymnastics, koalas, and Chick-fil-A."
The Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the crash and seeking information about the white SUV involved.
