The fire broke out in the 100 block of Isabella Road in West Nantmeal Township around 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, EHBEMS detailed in a release.
The Twin Valley Fire Department was the first crew called to the scene of the fire originally reported to 911 as "a large fire in the middle of a field," but soon "Additional callers reported a possible house was on fire with a barn as an exposure and they could see very 'tall flames,'" as stated in the release.
Within minutes the fire was visible for miles, as Chief Hornberger confirmed both the barn and house on a farm were on fire as of 9:15 p.m.
At first, crews could not locate the homeowners and were advised that they may have been entrapment, but thankfully they were soon located, the Chief explained.
During the search for the couple, a second alarm was rung. Additional crews from Berks, Chester, Lancaster, and Montgomery counties came to the scene.
Ambulances and medics also came to rehabilitate the exhausted firefighters, and as the night went on soon food and drinks were needed to help energize the crews.
The fire was not officially placed under control until 12:36 a.m. and the scene did not clear until 5:21 a.m., mean crews were there for over eights hours.
The crews on the scene included the following fire departments: Twin Valley, Honey Brook, Glenmoore, Wagontown, Ludwigs Corner, Geigertown, East Brandywine, Churchtown, Weaverland Valley, Garden Spot Fire Rescue, Lionville, Norco, Keystone Valley, Pequea Valley, Ridge, Christiana Fire Companies.
The cause of the fire has not been released, nor has the estimated cost of damage.
