The Annville-Cleona Fire Department and mutual aid crews responded to the 400 block of East Chestnut Street at 6:29 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke billowing from the eaves, officials said.

With the resident unaccounted for, a second alarm was struck. Crews searching the home found the man unresponsive in a smoke-filled hallway while others worked to contain the flames, according to authorities. He was rushed to a hospital by EMS but succumbed to his injuries.

The fire was quickly brought under control and remained contained to the kitchen, though smoke and water damage extended throughout the home, authorities said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Cleona Borough Police and Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshals. The victim’s identity has not been released pending next-of-kin notification.

Multiple fire and EMS units from Lebanon County assisted at the scene.
