The Philadelphia Public School District has set early dismissals for its more than 70 schools without air conditioning, as heat index values are expected to soar up to 100 degrees.
The plan to let schools without A/C three hours early takes effect Tuesday, Sept. 5 and Wednesday, Sept. 6. The plan could carry into Thursday and Friday, depending on heat conditions throughout the week, district officials said.
"The District’s Extreme Heat Emergency Response Procedures are activated when outside temperatures are forecasted to reach or exceed 85℉ for one or more consecutive days," its website says.
"To minimize last-minute disruption for our students, families and staff, our goal is to make schedule decisions as early as possible, and no later than 24 hours in advance."
