The officer was conducting stationary work enforcement in the westbound lanes with his emergency lights fully activated near milepost 340.5 in Philadelphia, when he was struck around 3:50 a.m., a spokesperson for the agency said. The trooper sustained moderate injuries as a result of the impact and was taken by Philadelphia Fire and EMS to the hospital for further evaluation.

Scarlato died from his injuries after an accident in McAdoo Borough, according to officials.  Scarlato, 55, suffered cervical spine fractures after an "at-home swimming incident," said the Lehigh County Coroner's Office.
