McDonald's is turning its menu into a pixelated adventure with a limited-time meal inspired by "A Minecraft Movie", which will be released in theaters on Friday, Apr. 4. The fast-food chain announced the partnership in a news release on Thursday, Mar. 20.
The Minecraft movie meal and Happy Meal will launch on Tuesday, Apr. 1. McDonald's will bring the video game's blocky world to life with exclusive in-game rewards, collectible toys, and a fiery new sauce.
The limited-time meals offer Minecraft fans a chance to score collectibles modeled after McDonald's icons reimagined as Minecraft treasures.
"When approaching any partnership, we look for the authentic role our brand can play in it," said Jennifer Healan, McDonald's vice president of marketing in the US. "McDonald's fans had already created a presence in the Minecraft game long before the opportunity to partner with the new film. So, we built upon what they started and created a totally immersive experience, custom A Minecraft Movie Meals in our restaurants, and collectibles that unlock unique in-game features.
"What's special about this campaign is that every component will feel recognizable to both fan bases — a true merging of the McDonald's and Minecraft universes."
The movie meal includes the choice of a Big Mac or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, plus medium fries, and a drink. Fans will also receive a limited-edition collectible.
The collectibles include the Big Mac Crystal, a glowing block infused with special sauce, and the Zombie Hamburglar, a wandering mob always in search of a late-night burger. Each comes with a code redeemable for an exclusive skin in the Minecraft Marketplace.
Minecraters looking to spice things up can try the Nether Flame Sauce, a limited-edition hot sauce inspired by the game's fiery underworld. Made with crushed red pepper, cayenne, and a touch of garlic, the sauce adds an extra kick to Chicken McNuggets or any order.
The Happy Meal version includes one of 12 movie-themed toys and a scannable code for an exclusive in-game quest at happymeal.com. Customers ordering through the McDonald's app will also receive a free add-on pack to unlock McDonaldland characters, builds, and tools in Minecraft.
"A Minecraft Movie" stars actors Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks.
