A Reading man accused in a human trafficking case was found guilty of ordering a "hit" on a testifying witness, according to prosecutors. Dushawn O. Ellis, 34, was convicted by a Berks County jury Wednesday, Dec. 7 on charges of witness intimidation and obstruction of justice, said the state Attorney General's Office. One person died in a three vehicle crash involving a dump truck towing a woodchipper, an SUV and a tractor trailer on Wednesday, Dec. 6 in Berks County. The crash that killed Ford Explorer driver, Lawrence Urban 65, of Birdsboro, happened around 10:45 a.m. on Ben Franklin Highway (Rt. 422) and N. Berks County investigators are closing the books on a decades-old cold case after DNA technology helped them identify the killer, according to the District Attorney's Office. Cynthia Baver was found dead from multiple stab wounds in her North 10th Street home on April 8, 2001, officials said at a press conference Friday morning. Two members of an alleged Berks-based "large-scale drug trafficking organization" are still on the run, according to the District Attorney's Office. Of the 29 men charged as part of the DA's "Operation Knockout" last month, all except for 44-year-old Jeffrey Kanelos and 34-year-old Moises Franco are in custody, authorities said. Reading Driver Shot In Car, Police Say
Reading police are investigating after a driver was hospitalized with gunshot wounds on Sunday evening, Nov. 19, authorities told Daily Voice. It happened on the 800 block of Ritter Street, the department said. The victim, a 50-year-old man, was shot multiple times in the lower half of his body, said police. Two adults were treated at Reading Hospital after gunfire rang out on a city street early Monday morning, Nov. 6, police told Daily Voice. It happened around 2 a.m. on the 300 block of McKnight Street, authorities said. Both victims sustained non-life-threatening wounds, according to police. Reading Worker Embezzled Thousands From Lancaster Co. Employer, Police Say
A Reading man faces multiple felony charges after authorities say he embezzled $16,000 from his employer. Timothy Beegle, 29, is accused of stealing from a business on the 300 block of Stevens Road in East Cocalico Township, according to police. He was arraigned on charges of theft by unlawful taking, theft by deception, and related counts and held on $30,000 bail, court records show. Beegle is due back in court for his preliminary hearing on Dec. 1.
