Bill Courtney, a respected Division I college basketball coach and current assistant at Temple University, died suddenly at age 55, the school announced on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
Courtney’s unexpected death has left the college basketball world in shock, with tributes pouring in from across the country.
Born in Alexandria, Virginia, Courtney played collegiately at Bucknell before launching a coaching career that spanned more than three decades. He joined Temple’s staff in June and quickly became a valued member of the Owls’ program.

Beloved Pennsylvania coach and devoted father Michael T. Essery died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at the age of 38.
Michael attended Sacred Heart Manoa, Cardinal O’Hara, and LaSalle University, where he was known for his academic and athletic excellence, his obituary says.
Michael coached for Sacred Heart CYO and served as a District Sales Manager for CompX Security Products.
