Here's When To Watch Planet Parade Celestial Event

Skywatchers will have an exceptional opportunity to witness a rare celestial event known as a "planet parade." This phenomenon will showcase all seven planets of our solar system, excluding Earth, in a unique alignment on Friday, Feb. 28.

Although the term "planet parade" is not scientific, it informally describes the simultaneous visibility of multiple planets arranged along a line in the sky, as explained by NASA.

The next chance to observe this type of alignment won’t come until the mid-2030s.

Although the term "planet parade" is not scientific, it informally describes the simultaneous visibility of multiple planets arranged along a line in the sky, as explained by NASA.

Unlike stars, which appear fixed, planets can shift positions due to their proximity to Earth, allowing observers to perceive their movement.

The prime time for observing this celestial display is around 6:10 p.m. Eastern time Friday, shortly after sunset. However, the exact timing may vary slightly depending on location.

Mercury, being the closest planet to the sun, will appear just above the horizon as the sun sets. Venus will shine brightly, followed by Jupiter and Mars, which will exhibit a distinctive pinkish hue.

Venus, Jupiter, and Mars will be visible to the naked eye, while Mercury may be tricky to spot at sunset.

The outer planets, Uranus and Neptune, will require binoculars or a telescope for observation. Friday offers optimal conditions for viewing Mercury, making this alignment particularly significant.

To fully appreciate this planetary alignment, it is recommended to find a dark location free from light pollution and to utilize binoculars or a telescope. Observers should face the western horizon between 6:10 and 6:30 p.m. ET for the best view.
