A Long Island town agreed to pay $550,000 to settle a federal discrimination lawsuit filed by a local mosque, according to court documents. The Town of North Hempstead will shell out $150,000 in damages to Hillside Islamic Center and $400,000 to the mosque’s Manhattan-based law firm, Linklaters, according to the agreement filed Friday, April 17 in New York’s Eastern District. A man was shot and killed in the parking lot of a mosque on Tuesday evening, July 30, according to Philadelphia police. Raheem Jefferson, 43, suffered multiple gunshot wounds near Al-Aqsa Islamic Society, 1501 Germantown Avenue, authorities said. Carjacking Outside Pennsylvania Mosque Leaves Man Dead: Report
A 65-year-old man was shot dead outside of an Upper Darby mosque late on Sunday evening, Oct. 29, 6abc reports. It happened near the Masjid Al Madinah Upper Darby Islamic Center around 7:45 p.m., according to the outlet. The victim, identified by loved ones as Mahabub Rahaman, was shot by armed carjackers during an attempted robbery, 6abc wrote. Property Damaged At Long Island Mosque
A religious flag was burned and graffiti was written on the base of a flag outside a Long Island mosque, police said. The Suffolk County Police Hate Crimes Unit and Arson Section reported that at approximately 2 a.m. on Monday, May 17, the vandalism was found at the Islamic Center of Suffolk County in Brentwood on 3rd Street, prompting an investigation. Police said that they are unaware of any nearby surveillance video of the suspect damaging the mosque.
