Richard Rodriguez, 32, of Freeport, was working to tow a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban on the westbound side of Sunrise Highway near Brentwood Road in Bay Shore when he was hit by a passing 2023 Kia Forte at 1:40 p.m., authorities said.

Rodriguez had been standing on the shoulder as he attempted to load the SUV onto the back of a 2020 Dodge Ram tow truck when the Kia hit him. The impact caused the Kia's driver, 38-year-old Anthony Licalzi of Massapequa, to lose control of the vehicle, sending it across several lanes before crashing into the center median.

Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene. Licalzi was not injured, police said.

All three vehicles involved were impounded for safety checks. Detectives from the Third Squad are continuing the investigation and are asking anyone with information about the crash to call 631-854-8352.
