Newly Identified Chemical In Drinking Water Could Be Toxic, Study Says
A newly discovered compound in drinking water has raised questions about its potential health risks. The chemical, known as chloronitramide anion (Cl–N–NO₂⁻), was found in all samples from 10 US drinking water systems that use chloramines, according to a study published in the journal Science on Thursday, Nov. 21. The research, led by Julian L. Fairey, an associate professor at the University of Arkansas, identified chloronitramide anion as a decomposition product of inorganic chloramines, which are commonly used to disinfect municipal water supplies. 21-Year-Old Jumps From New Tappan Zee Bridge
This story has been updated. A 21-year-old man jumped midspan from the new Tappan Zee Bridge and was rescued from the water. The incident occurred on the Westchester/Rockland County border around 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13. According to the Tarrytown Fire Department, the Marine 5 crew responded within minutes, equipped with rescue swimmers onboard. The crew quickly located the victim in the water, loaded the man into the boat, and brought them back to the Tarrytown Marina. 26-Year-Old Drowns In Capital Region Lake While Out With Family
A 26-year-old Capital Region man was pulled from a lake over the weekend after he drowned while out with his family, authorities said. Police in Rensselaer County were called to Poestenkill Gorge Park on Linden Avenue in Troy just after 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1. A Troy man had gone into the water and not resurfaced. Bystanders pulled him out, but it was too late. Responders performed CPR and rushed him to an area hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, Troy police said. The man's name wasn't released.
