The well-loved Mexican restaurant, located at 536 East Main St. since 1976, announced on Sunday, March 9, that it would be closing its doors.
"For 49 years, El Bandido has been more than just a restaurant. It’s been a home. A gathering place. A place where strangers became regulars and regulars became family," the Tello family shared in their farewell announcement.
"I wish I could say we lasted forever. I wish I could say we fought the fight and won. But some battles aren’t about winning or losing. Some battles are about knowing when to let go," the owners continued.
A new business will take over the location, though details on its replacement have not been announced. The Tello family expressed hope that it will be built with "the same love, the same passion, and the same connection to this community that we always had."
Though the restaurant is closing, there is a glimmer of hope for fans of El Bandido’s signature dishes. In response to a social media comment, the restaurant hinted that they are considering creating a cookbook featuring their iconic recipes—though no final decision has been made.
According to the owners, the eatery's last day on Sunday wasn’t just about goodbyes, but about one last toast, one last meal, and one last moment together.
"Thank you for 49 years of memories, of loyalty, of being part of something greater than just a business," the owners wrote.
