Live Bird Markets Shut Down In Nassau County To Stop Avian Flu Spread
New York officials are taking aggressive action to stop the spread of bird flu.
An order issued by the Department of Agriculture and Markets (AGM) on Friday, Feb. 7, directed live bird markets in New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties to close for five days, Gov. Hochul’s office said.

An ex-convict could be heading back to prison after being convicted of robbing a Long Island laundromat at gunpoint.
Emilio Hernandez, 54, of Bay Shore, was found guilty of robbery and related charges by a Suffolk County jury on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
Hernandez was armed with a pistol when he entered a laundromat on the Sunrise Highway Service Road in Bay Shore donning a mask, hat, and sunglasses on April 11, 2023, according to prosecutors.

Murder-Suicide Ends In LA Fitness Parking Lot On Long Island
Two men are dead following a suspected murder-suicide that ended outside a Long Island gym.
Officers were called to a Lindenhurst residence on Nevada Street for a man lying in the front yard just before 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3. They found Marek Gusciora, 66, dead from a gunshot wound to his chest, Suffolk County Police said.
A little over an hour later, detectives located Augustyn Jedra, 69, who is homeless, dead in a parked vehicle behind the LA Fitness on Park Avenue, roughly four blocks south of the Nevada Street scene, police said.

Amanda Burnside, 42, of East Quogue, was found guilty of arson and related charges by a Suffolk County jury on Monday, Jan. 27.
Burnside attempted, but ultimately failed, to start fires at two occupied homes in Hampton Bays and succeeded in starting a fire at a third home that was occupied by four people in November 2023, according to the Suffolk County DA’s office.

Suffolk Officer Brendan Gallagher Released From Hospital After LIE DUI Crash (Update)
Suffolk County Police Officer Brendan Gallagher, critically injured in a DUI crash on the Long Island Expressway earlier this month, will be released from Stony Brook University Hospital on Monday, Jan. 27, officials announced.
Gallagher, a three-year veteran of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Street Takeover Task Force, was gravely injured on Sunday, Jan. 5, when a Ford Mustang driven by a suspected impaired driver sideswiped his vehicle, causing it to overturn near Exit 55 in the westbound lanes of the LIE, police said.
