World War II Era Letter In Bottle Discovered By Woman During Tropical Storm Debby
Shortly after Debby made landfall along Florida's west coast as a Category 1 hurricane earlier this month, it produced something no forecaster — or anyone else — could have predicted. Suzanne Flament Smith, age 46, of Tampa, discovered it on Wednesday, Aug. 7, in the form of a World War II-era artifact. She said she found it while collecting debris in the city of Safety Harbor. It was a bottle sealed by a cork. Inside was a handwritten letter from a location in Virginia over 800 miles away near Virginia Beach. Former High School All-County Football, Basketball Standout In Westchester Dies
George Taranto, a Connecticut resident and former high school sports standout in Westchester County, has died at the age of 77. According to his obituary, Taranto, of Danbury, was a graduate of Ardsley High School and was all-county in football and basketball. He served in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1965. Taranto worked as a buyer for Bayer Aspirin in Tarrytown for more than 35 years. He also loved to hunt, fish and golf. New York State is scouting additional new sites for temporary hospitals, with a goal of having a 1,000-plus patient overflow facility in each NYC borough as well as Westchester, Rockland, Nassau and Suffolk counties, Gov. Navy Veteran Charles J. 'Corky' Kelly Of Orange County DIes At 47
Lifelong Orange County resident Charles J. ”Corky” Kelly died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh. He was 47. The son of the late Charles E. Kelly and Kathy Rigney Kelly, he was born on July 13 in Middletown. A veteran of the United States Navy, Corky served his country from 1988-1992. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1308, Catholic War Veterans and The Church of the Infant Saviour Church. He also gained the rank of Eagle Scout.
