A police department in Northern Westchester is mourning the sudden loss of one of its own. Gregory Jones, an officer with the Peekskill Police Department, died on Thursday, Nov. 24 at the age of 48, according to his obituary. A native of Orange County, Jones was born and raised in Middletown and earned his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill before beginning his law enforcement career with the Orange County Sheriff's Office, his obituary said. Now-former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo granted clemency to six people on his way out of office in Albany, drawing a backlash. Cuomo, whose resignation officially took effect as of 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 23, commuted the sentences of four people, referred one case to the parole board, and gave another a full pardon during his final hours in office. Area College Athlete Dies After Accident
A college athlete in the area has died after a water accident. Eric Birighitti was the victim of the accident in his home country of Australia, St. Thomas Aquinas College, located in Rockland County in Sparkill, said. The cause of the accident is unclear. A veteran energy company executive with a background in education has been named the ninth president of St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, succeeding retiring President Margaret Fitzpatrick. Brian D. Daly comes to the college following a 30-year career as an executive with National Grid and its predecessor companies. Five students in Westchester and Rockland counties have earned SUEZ-NAWC scholarships worth $3,000. SUEZ and the New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) announced the recipients of the scholarships, which are intended to assist high school seniors who are pursuing degrees relating to the water industry.
