Outgoing New York State Assemblyman John McGowan (R-District 97) found himself chasing away multiple people wearing ski masks who had broken into his Rockland County home in the middle of the night. A Hudson Valley family was displaced after a fire ripped through the home, traveling through the heating duct system. The incident occurred at 60 Gove St. in the City of Newburgh at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, December 12. According to Mike Neppl, chief of staff for the City of Newburgh, the seat of the fire was located in the basement of the home, with fire traveling in the heating system ductwork to the upper floors. Car Engulfed In Flames On Parkway In Hudson Valley
A vehicle fire prompted an early morning response on the Taconic State Parkway. The blaze happened on Saturday, Oct. 19 around 8:30 a.m. in Northern Westchester, when an SUV caught on fire on the southbound side in Hawthorne. Arriving fire crews soon found the vehicle consumed by flames and quickly hosed it down, putting the blaze out completely. The response took around an hour and sent plumes of smoke up into the air on the parkway, as seen in images of the fire released on the Hawthorne Fire Department's social media page. The Dutchess County Department of Public Works announced that the replacement of a bridge on Ridge Road in the town of Dover had been completed, and the structure had been opened to traffic. A small plane struck a runway light at Hudson Valley Regional Airport during a training flight. The incident took place around 8:22 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the airport in Wappingers Falls, said the Capt. John Watterson with the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office. According to Watterson, a flight instructor and a student pilot were in the small aircraft when the plane struck a short runway light. ID Released For Man Killed On Snowmobile In Area
A man killed during a snowmobile crash in the area has been identified by New York State Police. David White, 34, of Campbell Hall, was killed at 10:20 a.m., Monday, Dec. 2, after crashing a snowmobile into a tree on Quarry Road in Campbell Hall in Orange County, said Trooper Steven Nevel. When police arrived on the scene they found White near the sled, Nevel said. An investigation revealed that White lost control of the snowmobile and struck a tree and was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Nevel said White was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Citing safety concerns following a string of racist incidents and hate crimes, some Syracuse University students are leaving campus early before the official start of the Thanksgiving holiday break. A rappel team from above the Palisades teamed up with a marine officer below to rescue three out-of-state hikers who'd become trapped on a cliff above the Hudson River. The women left the marked trail Monday afternoon and were caught on steep, boulder-filled terrain in the Alpine section of Palisades Interstate Park near what's known as the Giant Stairs, PIP Police Lt. A new report from Backgroundchecks.org named three Rockland County municipalities among the "safest cities" in New York. Background Checks analyzed the most recent FBI crime report and put together this resource, which shows that New York has an overall crime rate at less than half that of the country's.
